Input Extended Characters on Windows and Macintosh Platforms

Issue

Morovia has identified that four font products use the extended characters (128~255 range). Additional attention must be paid if you are working on Macintosh platform in order to generate barcode correctly.

Reading this article is strongly recommended if you are working on Macintosh version of these products:

This article also explains how to input the extended characters on both platforms.

Reason

On Macintosh platform extended characters have different code values than the counterparts on Windows Platform. Yet a character is identified by the name, not the value. Thus, you can not simply save the FontPal result into a text file and transfer to Macintosh. You have two alternatives:

  1. Generate the barcode string from Internet Explorer through Morovia FontPal Web Utility. IE takes cares of the encoding conversion when you paste the string to your Macintosh application
  2. Manually perform the character conversion. For example, the FontPal generates the barcode string À[)21898|hsdkaS]Â among which there are two extended characters À and Â. You use the method outlined below to type these two characters.

Input Extended Characters

On Windows platform you can input the extended character by holding the ALT key and using the numeric keypad to type the decimal Unicode value. For example, to type character Agrave À, holding ALT key while typing 192 from the numeric keypad.

On Macintosh you input the extended character by using so called “deadkey” combination. To input the character Agrave À, hold option key while pressing grave `. Releasing both and press capital A.
